Dorie Miller Honored

We don’t often have “news” about this podcast as the events covered happened more than 70 years ago. However, this is a special update.

In 2014, we shared the story of Doris “Dorie” Miller, a heroic black Sailor who won the Navy Cross for his actions during Pearl Harbor. He was only a mess attendant aboard the USS West Virginia when the attack occurred. When the bomb hit, Miller carried several wounded crewmen to safety and then took over an anti-aircraft that had been left unmanned as a result of the attack and fired on the attacking Japanese planes The episode showed not only Miller’s heroism but how that heroism wasn’t honored during his life due to his race.

Last month, it was announced that the next Navy Aircraft Carrier will be named after Miller. A well-deserved and long overdue honor.
